School Counseling
Social, Emotional & Academic Support
The counseling department at Detroit Cristo Rey consists of two counselors that each work with two grade levels.
Ms. Elvia works with all the freshmen and sophomores, and Ms. Sesi works with all the juniors and seniors.
Counseling at DCR is more unique than your average high school counselor. The counselors do not work with students regarding scheduling concerns, transcripts, college visits or college counseling. School counselors at DCR work with students to provide emotional, social and academic support. All students can meet with counselors as needed. There is no requirement or referral needed to meet with the counselors.
Examples of counseling services provided at DCR:
- Academic concerns
- Crisis intervention
- Grief counseling
- Career counseling
- Anger management
- Family conflicts
- Peer conflicts
- Support for depression and/or anxiety
- Therapy referrals
School counseling does not replace therapy. The counselors will inform parents/guardians when a therapy referral is recommended. Parents/guardians are encouraged to reach out to counselors if they have any concerns they would like to discuss. Counselors are also available to meet with parents when needed, appointments made in advance are preferred.
