Father Foley Coming to Town!
Tue May 11, 2010

I am very excited. Father Foley is visiting Detroit Cristo Rey High School this week! As many of you know, Father Foley is the founder of the Cristo Rey Network. His spirit and vision have guided the network from one school to the current network of twenty four schools. If you are not already doing so, make sure you are reading his blog. I always find it inspiring.

In 2008, Father Foley was recognized with the Presidential Medal of Honor. It is the second highest award a civilian can get. You must have to cure cancer to get the highest award!

This is not the first time Father Foley has been to Detroit. He is always generous with his time and last year he spoke at our Garden Party. While Father is in town on this visit, he will be taping a radio interview with Jack Krasula. We will share details on the airing once it is confirmed. He will also meet with some friends of the school. I am delighted that he will also be at our CWSP Appreciation Breakfast on Thursday. Having him join us is a small way to show our gratitude to our job sponsors.

Please keep Detroit Cristo Rey High School in your prayers.

Time for a Party!
Mon May 10, 2010

On Sunday, May 23rd, Detroit Cristo Rey High School will be hosting its second annual Garden Party. His Excellency, Archbishop Vigneron will be joining us as our featured speaker. Charles and Gwen Scales will be providing the musical entertainment, with a special guest appearance by Mr. Brinson! In addition, there will be hors d’oeuvres and refreshments for our guests. Plus, I have been assured that the weather will be picture perfect. Last year the party was wonderful and I think it will be even better this year.

To make an event like this happen takes a lot of work. We are fortunate that we have a group of women who have eagerly taken this on for a second year - Suzanne Anderson, Carol Florence, Chris Furchak, Susan Horvats, Nene Reese and Molly Robinson. This year we were also able to add a new member, Mary Counihan. They have been at the school throughout the year getting ready for the big day. They do a great job. Of course, Mr. Quinn, our Director of Development also plays a big role in making the event a success.

We have been blessed that many people have signed up to donate items to the silent auction or be a sponsor for the party. Their support is critical.

For more information on the party – check out our web page devoted to the festivities. I hope you all will join us for a great time on May 23rd!

Off to Marian High School
Tue May 04, 2010

This evening, a contingent from Detroit Cristo Rey High School will be traveling to Bloomfield Hills. We have been invited by Marian High School to make a presentation to their parents about our work study program. Hopefully some of them may be in a position to provide a job for our students next year, or connect us with someone that can.

There is a strong connection between the two schools. Both are sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of Immaculate Heart of Mary (Detroit Cristo Rey is also sponsored by the Basilian Fathers). We both have the same goal; prepare our students for success in college and in life. We all agree that a Catholic education has strong value whether the student lives in Detroit or Oakland County.

We also have another link. Our science teacher, Ms. O’Connell is a graduate of Marian and her mom is a teacher there! In fact, along with Sr. Lenore, IHM, Mrs. O’Connell was instrumental in arranging the program this evening.

Wish us luck!

Motor City Lyric Opera
Fri Apr 30, 2010

For the most part, my musical knowledge begins and ends with Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. But today, along with the students of Detroit Cristo Rey, I received a wonderful introduction to the world of opera. The Motor City Lyric Opera visited our school and put on an excellent show titled “Schubert to Showboat”. The company is led by Mary Callaghan Lynch, whose passion for the music is immediately evident. The vocalists in the troupe were Amy, Leah and Jonathan. They were amazing. Amanda was wonderful on keyboards.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous as to how our students would react to music that is not on any of their IPod playlists. But it turned out; they were very interested and seemed to enjoy the music. In fact, Mary commented that Detroit Cristo Rey was the most attentive audience for which they had performed.

Mostly, I like our students in the classroom (or at their jobs). I think that is the best way to prepare them for college success. But sometimes they benefit from a perspective on arts and culture that they would not normally receive.

Thanks Motor City Lyric Opera!

What Happened to the School Year?
Tue Apr 27, 2010

I got back to the school on Friday after a wonderful week at the Cristo Rey Network meeting. The meeting was in Omaha and what a great city! I was really impressed by the downtown area. It is always great to get together with the teams from the other 23 Cristo Rey schools. I am always struck at these meetings how willing each school is to help out with their learnings and experience. Everyone is truly committed to seeing each school in the network achieve its goal of preparing our students to graduate from college. It was especially nice to review some of the data from the older Cristo Rey schools which demonstrated that Cristo Rey students are attending and graduating from college at well above the national average!

Now that I am back at school, I was stunned to see that we are already in the final grading period. How could that be possible? I wish time had gone this fast when I was a student.

We have a lot coming up between now and the end of the school year. We have two CWSP breakfasts planned for potential new job sponsors, including one this Friday. Next week, all of our students will be visiting the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. This will be a chance for the students to meet many members of one of the religious communities that sponsor our school. Later in the month, we will be having our second annual Garden Party. I hope I will see many of you there! We will also be having an appreciation breakfast for our current CWSP sponsors. Finally, my hero – Fr. Foley is coming to visit the school in May.

When I was a kid, I used to get mad when “old people” complained how fast time goes. Now I’m afraid I’ve become one of them!

Pray for the students of Detroit Cristo Rey High School.

Off to Omaha!
Mon Apr 19, 2010

This week, the Cristo Rey Network will be having its annual meeting. We will be gathering in Omaha, the home of St. Peter Claver High School, a Cristo Rey school in its third year. The theme for this year’s meeting is “No Money, No Mission.” It is a reminder that without donors and job sponsors – we cannot achieve our goal of preparing all of our students to become future college graduates. I look forward to discussing with other schools what successful strategies they are using in the areas of development and work study.

I also want to thank our friends at PPG for a great day last Friday. They arranged for 17 of our students to visit the River Rouge automotive plant. It was a great tour, as we learned about the history of the “Arsenal of Democracy” and then saw first hand how Ford F150 trucks are assembled. As part of my prior career, I have been in automotive assembly plants many times – but it is fascinating to me every time I visit. If you have a chance, check out the River Rouge facility.

Have a great week and pray for Detroit Cristo Rey High School.

Following My Daughter’s Footsteps
Fri Apr 09, 2010

It is always interesting to me the many different ways people become part of the Cristo Rey family – whether they are a job sponsor, financial supporter or a member of the school team.

My path started with my daughter Maria. As she approached graduation from John Carroll University, she made the decision to do a couple of years of community service. As she looked at various opportunities, she learned about a high school in Chicago called Cristo Rey that seemed to be doing some amazing things. She spoke with me about it and asked me to check out the web site and give her my opinion. Well, I went to the web site, watched the 60 Minutes video, called her up and said if they ever opened a Cristo Rey in Detroit, I would want to work there! Then a few months later, my wife came home from Manresa Retreat Center and said she had seen a poster announcing an information session on Detroit Cristo Rey!! I spent the next six months writing, e-mailing and phoning anyone I knew associated with the school. Finally they decided that they needed to either get a restraining order or offer me a job. Fortunately, in March 2008 they offered me the chance of a lifetime to become part of Detroit Cristo Rey High School.

My daughter spent two years working as a volunteer at Cristo Rey Jesuit in Pilsen teaching Economics and in Campus Ministry. Last July, she moved across the country to San Francisco to be part of the conversion of Immaculate Conception Academy to a Cristo Rey school. Maria is part of the Corporate Work Study team at ICA (and now gets paid!). She is also always quick to point out that Cristo Rey was her idea, not mine.

Please keep all of the Cristo Rey students and schools in your prayers.

Adventures in Technology, PPG and Detroit Cristo Rey
Thu Apr 01, 2010

Earlier this year, Detroit Cristo Rey was contacted by Catalyst Connection to see if we were interested in participating in a project known as Adventures in Technology (AIT). The goal of AIT is to increase the interest of high school students in science and math. They do this by connecting schools and corporations to work on a real life business problem.

Cristo Rey decided to take advantage of the opportunity and we have been paired with PPG. This is going to be a voluntary activity for our students and I was really pleased when 18 students (and two teachers) signed on. On Tuesday we piled on a bus (paid for by Catalyst Connection – thanks) and headed to PPG’s Automotive headquarters about 25 miles north of our school. We meet with Jane Harrington (Manager, Color Styling), Mike Millar (Manager, Strategic Planning) and Matt Marek (General Manager) from PPG. We were also joined by Scott Dietz from Catalyst Connection. We were there for over two hours and it was a great experience. The folks from PPG explained to our students how car makers decide what colors cars get painted. We learned that it varies by type of vehicle (sports car versus luxury car) and even by geographic region (China versus the US). The students were stunned to learn that even a basic color like black can have countless different variations and designers spend a lot of time choosing the best one for the vehicle.

Our project is to determine what the best color palette would be for a new hybrid vehicle. There will be many components to the project, but one assignment will be to survey potential car buyers. If you would like to be part of the survey, send me a note at mkhoury@detroitcristorey.org. The people at PPG were wonderful (and they learned that ordering pizza for twenty adults is not the same thing as ordering pizza for twenty teenagers). We are looking forward to the project and we will keep you up to date on our progress.

Also, if you have not done so, read Father Foley’s (Cristo Rey founder) blog from March 24th titled How Embarrassing. It is just wonderful.

Have a blessed Easter and keep Detroit Cristo Rey High School in your prayers.

High Fashion and Cristo Rey
Wed Mar 31, 2010

No one has ever confused me with a fashion expert. But I’m starting to become a lot more interested in jewelry these days. A supporter of the school, Maria Elena Rodriguez, has designed her own line of jewelry which I am told is fabulous!! Personally, I like it because she is donating 40% of the proceeds to the school.

If you would like to be the picture of style, and support Detroit Cristo Rey High School – you can find the jewelry on sale at the Detroit Science Center – The Accidental Mummies exhibit.

We will be starting our Easter break this Thursday. The staff will be off until next Tuesday. The students and faculty will return a week from Monday. I hope everyone has a blessed Easter holiday.

College Visit
Thu Mar 25, 2010

I’m excited because today I am taking four sophomores to visit the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. We are going to meet with an Admissions Counselor and take a walking tour of the campus. Finally we are going to sit in on a Linear Algebra class. These students were selected because they are part of our Honors program.

I’m looking forward to this trip for a couple of reasons. Any time we get our students on a college campus, it is a good thing. It helps them see themselves as a college student in just a few years. I think it makes it more real for them. The other interesting thing about today is the Linear Algebra we will be attending. It will be taught by my son – Michael Khoury Jr.! Mike earned his Ph.D from Ohio State University, but now teaches at Michigan – kind of a weird combination.

I could tell Mike’s students a lot of stories that would really embarrass him. However, he could tell my students a lot of stories that would really embarrass me. So, we have agreed to just say hello to each other.

Please tell someone about Detroit Cristo Rey High School this week-end.
